AI Literacy & AI Ethics MasterClass
The EU AI Act is the world’s first horizontal and standalone law governing the commercialization and use of AI, and a landmark piece of legislation for the EU. However, according to Cisco’s latest report, only 13% of companies are fully AI-ready and 85% feel the urgency to act within 18 months, but gaps in infrastructure, talent, and culture persist, lacking "AI Literacy". Thus, the time to prepare is already due!
Among the various provisions of the EU AI Act, Chapters I and II shall apply from 2 February 2025, which includes Article 4. This article mandates that organizations ensure that those who are involved in the operation and use of AI have the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to adequately assess AI-related risks and opportunities (e.g., through training and hiring staff with the appropriate background and skillset). It is important to know that this legal obligation applies to all AI systems, irrespective of the level of risk that the AI system presents.
What is AI Literacy?
AI literacy is defined as the skills, knowledge, and understanding that enable providers, deployers, and affected persons to make informed decisions regarding AI systems. This includes awareness of opportunities, risks, and potential harms associated with AI. AI literacy is crucial for the ethical deployment of AI, ensuring that all stakeholders understand the implications of AI use and can manage associated risks effectively.
Who Needs to Comply?
The EU AI Act requires both providers and deployers of AI systems take appropriate measures to ensure their staff and other persons dealing with AI systems have a sufficient level of AI literacy. The requirement applies regardless of the perceived risk of the AI system, meaning that staff will need to be appropriately trained when using or operating any AI system subject to the AI Act – even if it qualifies as a “limited risk” AI system. Although, presumably the AI literacy measures should be commensurate to the level of risk associated with the AI system.
What is the Requirement?
The EU AI Act requires that organizations “take measures to ensure, to their best extent, a sufficient level of AI literacy”. It requires in particular that the level of AI literacy aligns with the technical knowledge, experience, education, and training of relevant staff as well as the context in which the AI system is used.
